Voice Acting Is Coming To True Colours!
Get your ears ready, gamers! Borealis here with some BIG news!
You read correctly - it's my absolute pleasure to announce that True Colours will officially feature voice acting! This is something that Venus: Improbable Dream didn't have. So many new features are coming to True Colours that I couldn't make happen before, and I'm so happy to be able to implement it all and share it with you! Lemme fill you in on some sweet details about the voice acting:
- True Colours will be partially voice acted. This means that instead of every single line being spoken as you read it, each character will have a set of words, short phrases and noises to reflect different emotions and responses, and one will play each time they speak. This is a less time-consuming but still really effective way to help those characters to feel more real, and for you to connect with them more deeply when you hear them speak!
- Six characters will be receiving voice actors. Brianna, Malik, Ash, Sean, Lydia and the Boss will have their very own voices!
- The protagonist will not have voice acting. I chose to leave them out for maximum self-insertability - I want you to be able to put yourself in their shoes as much as possible, and for this reason, I've already given them a gender neutral appearance. To build on this, I believe leaving them voiceless will further enhance this transparency so that they can feel even more like 'you', without forcing you to have a specific voice. The protagonist will have a couple of subtle noises assigned to them - breathing or gasping, for example - but no actual voice.
So there you have it! How's that for a sweet bonus feature? In other news, I have an important question for you. The free True Colours demo has been out for a while now, but would you be interested in playing an extended demo with more interactivity, more story and more music and artwork? Nice!
Hehe thanks! Making progress on it already and it adds SO much!
I'm not a fan of voicing VNs (don't tell my VA friends), it changes the parts of the brain that activate - like the difference between the immersive act of reading vs the relaxing act of watching a move or anime.
And I love good VA in dubbed anime, but even if my favorite one Starblazers 2199 were a VN, the sound, tempo, and cadence of the character voices in my head would be WAY different than the VA's on screen.
Having said that, VA is something I think a majority of VN fans are happy to find in a VN.
I can understand your perspective tbh. I personally don't find it a downside if a VN doesn't have voice acting - I'm happy to let my imagination create voices. But I do also appreciate voice acting when it appears, as it automatically adds an extra dimension to each character.
I've worked hard to find VAs that could really give my characters voices that I felt were authentic to them, and hopefully players will enjoy them!
