Behind The Scenes Devlog #13!

Hey gamers!  It's Borealis here!

You're in luck!  For the next group of devlogs, I've decided to give you guys an exclusive look at ALL 34 TRACKS on the Venus: Improbable Dream soundtrack, with sneak previews of what they sound like, and behind the scenes info on each one!  Let's get started!

--

Today, we're focusing on the first three tracks, which are also the three that you hear first in the game (if you've played the demo, you'll recognise them!).  When you're ready to hear them, play the video below!

Track 1 - Dream (Menu Version)

This is the first piece of music you hear, and accompanies the game's main menu.  A special part of the Venus: Improbable Dream soundtrack is that it contains a full vocal song that appears at the very end, and for the main menu theme, I decided to create an instrumental version of it.  So when you open up the game, what you're actually hearing is a sneaky hint towards the big finale song!  I can't wait for you to hear it, and this menu version gives you a little taste of what it might be.

Track 2 - Heartbeat

This track was specifically designed to accompany Kakeru's dark thinking/low moods.  It's quite melancholic, and betrays the deep sadness that he tends to feel towards his situation.  Also, since Kakeru plays the piano, I decided to make this theme solely for the piano to make it more relevant to him.  This referencing of people's instruments is something that reappears multiple times later in the soundtrack, so look forward to noticing those little touches in other tracks!

Track 3 - Nichijou

The Japanese word 'nichijou' refers to something that is ordinary or everyday, and that's exactly what this track represents.  It's a theme that accompanies Kakeru's regular activities and thought processes, when nothing dramatic or special is going on.  I designed it to try to allow it to fit multiple moods, as it can have both a content or a slightly down feeling to it, depending on what dialogue is accompanying it.  There's also a story behind its creation; years ago, I was invited by another indie game developer to create the soundtrack for a fan game dedicated to the YouTuber Markiplier.  Unfortunately, the game never got completed, but I'd recorded three tracks already, all of which now appear in Venus: Improbable Dream!  Nichijou was originally the theme for walking through a forest in the Markiplier game, and had a somewhat Studio Ghibli-esque, wonderous vibe to it.  Feeling that it was too expansive for the scenes I wanted to use it in for Venus, Improbable Dream, I changed it up, reducing it to a simple harp, flute, xylophone and triangle.  It fits the game much better this way, although every now and then, the original pops into my head!

And those are the three tracks we'll cover today, but tune in on Monday for the next three tracks and their behind the scenes info!

Have a fantastic weekend, friends!
