Behind The Scenes Devlog #19!

Hey everyone!  Borealis here!

It's getting closer and closer to Christmas, but if you're sick of hearing festive songs, then look no further, because it's time for more Venus: Improbable Dream soundtrack exploration!  Check out the video below to hear the three songs I'll talk about in this episode.  Let's go!

Bloom

Now this track really is a throwback!  While the 'Bloom' you'll get to know in Venus: Improbable Dream is an instrumental piano track, it was originally an acoustic/folk style song that I wrote and recorded wayyyyyy back in about 2008/9, during my very first solo project.  It was called 'Sweet Companion' and was something of a gloomy love song.  When I was thinking about old songs that I could repurpose for Venus, as you now know I had a tendency to do, I figured that the somewhat odd chord changes and melody might make for an interesting instrumental piece that would suggest both light and dark feelings, suiting either a contented or slightly troubled mood.  I arranged it for a solo piano, and thus it became 'Bloom'!

Drift

...you guessed it - it's another redesigned old song!  This time, the original track was recorded during my university days in 2011/2012, and was an electric guitar soundscape that took inspiration from one of my favourite musicians, Robert Fripp of King Crimson.  He created his own style of guitar-laden music, called Frippertronics, where he played into a tape machine that would loop the sounds back to him, and he would improvise guitar solos over the repeating noise.  I decided to create my own version, but didn't use the track for anything, and it just sat in my music folder untouched for years.  Reimagining it for Venus, I transformed it from a guitar-fest into a dreamy harp and synth affair, keeping the repeating motif as the 'chord' you hear throughout, and the harp taking place of the guitar solo.  It became much more ethereal in this form, hence my choice to rename it as 'Drift'.

Blue Skies

This is without a doubt the most cheerful song on the Venus: Improbable Dream soundtrack, and its title suggests as much.  Also, uh...  we may or may not have hit our third repurposed piece of the day...  I swear I write new music too!  Ahem!  Remember that Markiplier fan game I was scoring that never happened?  This was the third and final piece that I'd already written for it, alongside 'Fissure' and 'Nichijou'.  In actual fact, 'Blue Skies' is exactly the same as its original version, nothing re-recorded at all, and in its context in the Markiplier game, was meant to be a sort of town theme that played whenever the character was in a certain place.  I figured its bright, breezy sounds would add a not very often heard happy touch to Venus, and elected it to be the theme that plays in the rare occasions that Kakeru is feeling excited or upbeat.

And that's all for this week!  On Monday, you'll be treated to three more tracks that are all quite different from each other, and one in particular is quite intense!

Have a great weekend everyone!
