Behind The Scenes Devlog #22!

Happy 2021, gamers!  Borealis here!

It’s finally January, and it’s time to wave goodbye to the weirdness that was 2020 and look to the future!  To start your year off with some fun, I’ve got the final soundtrack preview here for you!  Check out the video below to hear the last two tracks, one of which is a special, very quick snippet of the only full vocal song!

Interval

This was one of the last tracks to be written for the game, and is used specifically when Kakeru is visiting a theatre style venue.  Naturally, this doesn’t happen many times during the game, but the scenes that do contain these moments are pretty important.  As you might be able to tell, I wanted the track to resemble those cinema background music songs you hear when you go to the movies, that play while you’re taking your seats and waiting for the entertainment to begin.  I especially wanted it to take after the 1990’s ones that are somewhat cheesy but familiar.  I actually listened to some old Cinemark intermission music on Youtube for inspiration!  After creating my own version, featuring similar styles of synths, piano and basic drums, I gave it the obvious but fitting title of ‘Interval’.

Dream

Now this is a treat for you!  You’re already familiar with ‘Dream (Menu Version)’, which I previewed all the way back in the first soundtrack devlog weeks ago, so you know that the menu of the game plays an instrumental version of a full song.  ‘Dream’ is the real track, the big emotional moment, and the only song with vocals, sung by myself.  It only plays over the credits of the game, once you achieve certain endings, and is very touching.  I actually wrote the song at something like 2am one night; I’d been thinking about what kind of song to create for this specific purpose, but wasn’t sure.  However, when I tried to go to sleep, I had a sudden flood of lyrics come into my head, and I couldn’t rest until I’d tried to figure them out.  Cue at least an hour of me typing furiously on my phone!  I remember writing the chorus first, and then added the verses afterwards, once I’d considered what I wanted to portray.  In the song’s lyrics, it essentially sums up what Kakeru thinks about Haruka after everything they’ve been through together, and is an uplifting ballad about connection, happiness and amazement at what has happened on their journey.  It also continues to play on the instrument association with the characters, featuring piano and flute prominently to represent Kakeru and Haruka together.  Naturally, I’m not going to give much of it away, as I want it to be a special moment for all of you lovely people to discover for the first time when you play, but the video above contains a very brief snippet of it, so I hope it’ll intrigue you!

And there you go - we’ve reached the end of our soundtrack previews!  As I’ve mentioned before, there are other songs by famous composers in the game, but I’ll leave them for you to discover as you play, so this brings us to the end of our music devlogs.  However, I’ve got plenty more things to show you, including new videos, Q&As, and more, so stick around!  I’m also going to be changing the devlog days to every Friday, once a week, as part of a new schedule of posting other things, so look forward to those new additions on the game’s official Twitter right here:
